Woodpecker Hill is where the flavours of Asia meet the wood-smoked succulence of American Barbecue. Meltingly smokey, slow-cooked meats take on the tastebud-popping zing of lemongrass and ginger, coriander and chilli, cumin and Vietnamese mint.

Chef Che Barrington brings his signature touch of Thai to the classic comfort of spring lamb, slow-cooked to perfection. Our crunchy, duck fat roasted spuds pop with a lime leaf chimichurri, and our traditional Yorkshire puds take on the gentle, aromatic spices of a Massaman-style gravy.

Che first fell in love with the light and vibrant flavours of modern Asian food while working at Martin Boetz’s Sydney restaurant, Longrain. It wasn’t long before he was backpacking through Thailand, boarding with families and learning alongside ‘the Mammas’ in their simple kitchens.

In 2011, Che opened MooChowChow, Auckland’s first modern Thai restaurant. This followed in 2013 with The Blue Breeze Inn, where Che combines Kiwi innovation with the ancient culinary tradition of regional Chinese food.

But with Woodpecker Hill, which opened in 2015, Che wanted to try something completely new – pairing Asian herbs, bastes and sauces with the best of slow-cooked Texan barbecue. The East-meets-West result, which Che calls “Asian Smokehouse Cuisine” was an instant hit, making taste buds soar, and cementing Che’s reputation as one of the most exciting chefs working in New Zealand today.

This option is an effortless way for your table to enjoy a mouth-watering selection of our most popular dishes, taking into account any dietary restrictions. We’ll check if you’d like the spend-per-head option when you arrive.

Of course, no matter your size, your group is always welcome to order off the menu. Our dishes are designed to share and arrive in a rolling manner as soon as they’re ready regardless of the size of your group. Is someone having a birthday? Let us know and we’ll adorn their dessert with a flickering candle. Or, if you’re bringing your own birthday cake, our staff will happily help you store and serve it as part of our $15 cake serving charge.
